East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD), a world renowned genetic, has been part of the Winners Circle since the late '90s to early 2000s. Preserving this lineage as a BX with a Texas twist from Shoreline Genetics, East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD) BX is now available in seed form. Let's dive deeper into what makes this cultivar special!
Chemdog '91: a Relative of East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD)
Commonly spelled with an "aw" and "o", Chemdog (Chemdawg), specifically Chemdog '91, is known as one of the parents to what will eventually become East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD).
As the legend goes, in June of 1991 at a Grateful Dead concert at Deer Creek Amphitheater in Noblesville, Indiana, a young breeder known as Greg "Chemdog" Krzanowski bought some weed from JoeB and Pbud called Dog Bud that happened to have some seeds.
Chemdog popped (4) of those seeds, three of which were dubbed, "Chemdog" (aka Chemdog '91), Chemdog "a" (Chem's Sister), and Chemdog "b".
Weasel supposedly renamed Chemdog '91 to "Diesel or NYC Diesel", as he wasn't a fan of the original name.
Side note, Soma from Soma's Sacred Seeds also made a New York City Diesel, which is completely separate from this variety.
Original Diesel = Chemdog '91 (Diesel/NYC Diesel) x Massachusetts Super Skunk
Relating to Sour Diesel, Chemdog '91 is thought to have been, "pollinated by either a DNL (Northern Lights x RFK Skunk/Hawaiian) or by Massachusetts Super Skunk (JJ-NYC)."
As one Reddit user pointed out, JJ-NYC used to work for Weasel in NYC before Chem/Diesel.
On February 17, 2010, in response to a comment about the characteristics of ECSD S1 offspring showing Hawaiian influences, user JJ-NYC from Top Dawg Seeds agreed while furthering idea that, "there's no way that the Mass SS is in the Sour Diesel. The Mass just doesn't have the stretch. My friend holds the DNL and the tropical Hawaiian influences are there, so is the stretch in the growth. The DNL is Hawaiian X RFK Skunk/NL. The lower branches of the DNL hermi if not pruned properly and it pollinated the 91 Chem Dawg. I've come to this conclusion over many years of growing the Chem Dawg, DNL, Mass SS, Sour Diesel and talking with the people who were originally involved with making the strains."
Given the experience, it seems a revised lineage is as follows:
Sour Diesel = Chemdawg '91 x DNL (Hawaiian x RFK Skunk/Northern Lights)
AJ's Sour Diesel: the Original Sour Diesel
Not to be confused with the Original Diesel made by Weasel, AJ's Sour Diesel is known and credited as the Original Sour Diesel, as in the real Sour Diesel cut - not Original Diesel, not East Coast Sour Diesel, not NYC Diesel from Soma.
"A small amount of seeds popped out of the Chem and we all assumed it was pollinated by one of the Sensi strains. I nicknamed these ‘Diesel’ and there was Diesel #1 and Diesel #2. I started growing these in 1994 and by ‘95-‘96, a random seed from them produced what came to be called Sour Diesel. Honestly, V wrote on his jar ‘Our Diesel’ to differentiate it. The number ‘5’ was already on the jar and the ‘5’ looked like an ‘S’ … ‘Our Diesel’ became ‘Sour Diesel.’"

Collectively, this means East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD) is Sour Diesel (AJ's cut) crossed to Soma's NYC Diesel (Double Sour Diesel), which was then backcrossed to AJ's Sour Diesel to make Sour Diesel BX 1.5, which was inbred (F2, F3?) to make Sour Diesel V3, also known as East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD).
